You've got your Ableton set dialed in. The tracks flow, the transitions hit, the energy builds exactly where it should. But your visuals? They're running on their own clock — approximate BPM, manual scene changes, nothing locked to the grid. Ableton Link changes that. It's the simplest way to get visuals that actually know where you are in the bar, and this guide shows you how to make it work with zero MIDI cables and zero configuration headaches.

What Ableton Link Actually Does
Ableton Link is a protocol that shares tempo and beat-phase information between applications over a local network. It's built into Ableton Live and supported by a growing number of iOS apps, hardware instruments, and desktop software.
What it does in practice: enable Link in Ableton, enable Link in your visual tool, and they lock together. No MIDI cables, no clock configuration, no manual BPM entry. Change the tempo in Ableton — the visuals follow. Start and stop the transport — the visuals know. Tap a new tempo mid-set — everything adjusts instantly.
Link doesn't require both apps to run on the same machine. You can run visuals on a separate laptop and they'll stay synced over Wi-Fi. But for most producers, running everything on one Mac is the simplest setup.
What Link Makes Possible for Visuals
Tempo sync is the foundation, but the real power is what you build on top of it:
BPM-synced shader parameters. Any visual parameter can be locked to divisions of the beat. A rotation that completes every 4 bars. A color cycle that shifts on every quarter note. A zoom that pulses in eighth-note triplets. The visuals feel rhythmically connected because they are.

1. Organize Visual Scenes by Song Section

Troubleshooting: When Link Doesn't Behave
BPM jumps or flickers between apps: Make Ableton the tempo master. In Link settings, set Ableton to "Start Stop Sync" and let it control the tempo. Arkestra will follow.
Visuals drift over time: Check your network — Link uses UDP over the local network. If you're on a congested Wi-Fi network, try creating a direct computer-to-computer network or using a wired connection. On a single machine, this is never an issue.
Link isn't discovering other apps: Make sure both apps are on the same network. Some VPNs interfere with Link discovery — try disabling your VPN temporarily.
